After spending 10 years in Newsrooms chasing the big story of the day all over Wisconsin, I was ready for a change. Most people know me as a TV News Reporter but I knew that I had more to offer than that. Fortunately, I walked away from that career as an Associated Press and Wisconsin Broadcasters Association Award Winner. Before TV came calling there was music... making mixtapes for my older siblings... crafting CDs for my friends... and bootlegging songs from Napster and Bearshare in college. After my first gig in 2011 I knew I wanted to be a DJ, but I didn’t see a career path.
In 2014, I moved to LA, with no job, no apartment and no actual plan. I started taking hosting classes thinking it would help me land a job as an Entertainment Reporter. I also took an Intro to DJing class at Scratch DJ Academy. I enjoyed it so much I immediately bought some equipment and started practicing. I managed to book some gigs but I still felt like I needed more training.
In June of 2019, I decided to go back to go back to my first love and enrolled in Scratch DJ Academy’s Certification Program. It’s twice a week from June to December. This is by far has been one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. After I complete this program my rates are going up so you might want to book me NOW, lol. Here’s the mix I created at the completion of level one. This mix is FAR from perfect. I’ve NEVER used vinyl but I made great progress in just six weeks.
The curriculum at Scratch is AWESOME and there are plenty of opportunities for networking and mentorship. I’ve been mixing records for a few years but it’s been great learning from seasoned working professionals. With all of these new tools in my arsenal as a DJ I’m confident I’ll be Dope by December.
We’re working on remixes and mashups now. Here’s another mix from class. The assignment was to remix a song and show how you would incorporate it into a mix.
I’m so blessed to be living my dream. I’ve wanted to be a DJ for as long as I can remember. I’m just not sure what took me so long lol.
